  1. What's at the Core of Upholstery Form? Foam products are integrated into many different items today, from those that we use all the time around the home and workplace to more industrial applications. The versatility of foam makes it ideal for a whole range of different uses and it can be enhanced and developed to be more resistant, durable and effective. Upholstery foam is one of the more common types of foam that all of us encounter, maybe on a daily basis. But what’s actually at the core of upholstery foam? UPHOLSTERY FOAM IS A BURGEONING INDUSTRY According to recent research, a third of all polyurethane foam worldwide goes into cushioning. There is no one single type of upholstery foam, as the type of foam that is required for a specific piece of furniture will depend on the requirements for comfort, feel, cost etc. Given that upholstery foam can be developed to suit the specific commercial needs of a manufacturer (including durability and comfort) it’s no surprise that it’s become such a vital part of the way that we produce furniture for sale today.

  2. UPHOLSTERY FOAM - THE BASICS The type of foam that is used in a piece of furniture will depend on the requirements for that design. However, there are also some common features that most types of upholstery foam will have in common and these are worth understanding a bit more about. Density. Most upholstery foam will have a ‘density rating’ that determines how long lasting the foam is likely to be and also how it feels to use. High density upholstery foam tends to be firmer and longer lasting. Of course, it’s worth bearing in mind that when it comes to comfort this is a pretty subjective concept so some flexibility is required. Quality. If you’re looking to determine the quality of upholstery foam then the density is not always the best indicator because there may be fillers added to the foam. There are two reliable indicators of foam quality: materials and performance. If upholstery foam has been made with quality materials then this creates a solid foundation for maintaining performance (firmness/softness and shape) over time, regardless of use. Textile. Another key factor that influences how upholstery foam performs is the textile that is around it. Think about the difference between a cushion that has been upholstered in leather, for example, compared to one in linen. Because upholstery foam is full of tiny air pockets it needs to be able to ‘breathe.’ If the textile is too tightly woven or is water impermeable then the foam doesn’t have any space to breathe and this can lead to ballooning. Innovation. There is a lot of innovation taking place in upholstery foam today, particularly when it comes to creating more sustainable choices. Bio-hybrid foams, for example, use a proportion of plant based material and it’s now possible to manufacture flexible polyurethane foams with a sustainable polyol made with up to 20% carbon dioxide. Upholstery foam is a key component in most furniture today and can make a big difference to comfort and cost effective production.
