  5. Stamp Act • March 22, 1765 • All paper, licenses, newspapers, playing cards, dice, etc. were taxed • Feared if they didn’t do anything, the British would continue to tax • How would the Stamp Act effect you today?

  7. Townshend Acts • Replaced the Stamp Act • Series of 5 laws beginning in 1767 • Named after Charles Townshend—British Treasurer • Taxed imported products such as glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea • How would you react today if writs of assistance were still allowed?

Quartering Act • Due to resistance in the colonies • Sent hundreds of British soldiers to keep watch of the colonists and enforce taxes • Colonists forced to house and feed British troops • Began boycott of British goods • What if the Quartering Act did apply to you today? How would you react?

Tea Act • 1773 • East India Tea Company is almost bankrupt • Britain excuses them from paying taxes • Extremely low prices on East India Company’s tea • used to promote English tea instead of smuggled Danish tea that was popular • Colonists feared East India Company would become a monopoly • Wanted freedom of choice! • What are some similar taxes today?

  10. Boston Tea Party • December 16, 1773 • Sons of Liberty dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor
