Current/beam timing and density scans in L-mode • Low ne / fast ramp + early beam -> High Te, Ti, steep profiles • Low ne / slow ramp + late beam -> Less steep profiles • High ne / fast ramp + early beam-> Lower Te • (more difficult due to MHD) • Increased power -> Steep profiles MHD ‘fragile’ ? • Neon injection (low ne) -> transport change w. ramp rate ? • CHERS, USXR, turbulence (core reflectometry) data • Main conditions to be later documented with MSE • (3 kG attempt)

  6. Higher density/ H-mode effects Ip(kA) H t(s) • Te flattens immediately after density increase / H-mode onset • In L-mode increasing ne or Pbeam caused internal reconnections

  7. TRANSP predicted q-profiles Fast ramp,early beam t (s) t=0.193 s ce ce min TRANSP q(r) Fast S. Kaye qmin Slow r/a t (s) q(r) • Strong shear reversal with fast ramp • Low ce boundary follows qmin • Lowest ce where s << 0 R(cm)

Summary • Current ramp / beam timing scans at low ne point to current profile • as major knob for both electron and ion transport in NSTX • TRANSP prediction suggests strong shear reversal needed to quench electron transport • Earlier GS2 simulations indicate such behavior characteristic of ETG • Role of density not yet clear (very few high ne ,high Te shots): • large energy/particle just facilitates overcoming strong instability ? • µ-tearing ? • Turbulence data brings new puzzles; fast particle MHD ? • GS2/Gyro comparison of low ne L-mode and H-mode regimes highly interesting • Could perturbative electron transport experiments reveal more about • origins of electron transport in NSTX ?
