  1. HOW FOSSILS FORMScience – Grade 4 Ms.MarkuChapter 5 – Earth Science

  2. AMBER SOMETIMES ENTIRE INSECTS BECAME TRAPPED IN STICKY SAP OOZING FROM CERTAIN TREES.

  3. FREEZING SOMETIMES ENTIRE ANIMALS WERE PRESERVED BY BEING FROZEN. MAMMOTHS ARE RELATIVES OF MODERN ELEPHANTS. FOSSILIZED MAMMOTHS HAVE BEEN FOUND IN ICE AND FROZEN GROUND IN THE NORTHERN PARTS OF ASIA AND NORTH AMERICA. BONES, HAIR, SKIN, FLESH AND EVEN INTERNAL ORGANS HAVE BEEN PRESERVED.

  4. TAR PITS MANY FOSSILS HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED IN TAR PITS. SABER-TOOTHED TIGERS, CAMELS, MAMMOTHS, AND OTHER ANIMALS BECAME STUCK IN TAR PITS AND DIED. THEIR FLESH DECAYED, WHILE THEIR BONES SANK. THE BONES WERE PRESERVED AS THE TAR AROUND THEM HARDENED.

  5. MUMMIES SOMETIMES ANIMAL REMAINS ARE PRESERVED AS MUMMIES. THEY SLOWLY DRIED OUT IN HOT, DRY REGIONS LIKE DESERTS. THESE FOSSILS CHANGE LITTLE SINCE THEY FORMED.

  6. CARBON FILM PLANTS AND ANIMALS THAT DECAY SLOWLY MAY LEAVE BEHIND A THIN FILM OF THE ELEMENT CARBON. CARBON FILMS OF FERNS, LEAVES, AND FISH OFTEN SHOW DETAILED OUTLINES.

  7. PETRIFIED ‘PETRIFIED’ MEANS TURNED TO STONE. PARTS OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS ESPECIALLY WOOD AND BONES, MAY ALSO BE PRESERVED BY BEING PETRIFIED. BONES HAVE A HARD, COMPACT OUTER LAYER. INSIDE IS A SPONGY LAYER WITH CONNECTED OPENINGS, OR PORES. WHEN A BONE IS BURIED, MINERALS SLOWLY SEEP INTO THE PORES AND FILL THEM.

  8. WHAT KIND OF FOSSIL WOULD BE FOUND IN A HOT, DRY DESERT? 2. WHAT IF YOU FOUND A PIECE OF A FOSSIL THAT LOOKS LIKE WOOD. WHAT COULD IT BE? 3. WHAT IF A FOSSIL HAD HAIR, SKIN AND INTERNAL ORGANS. WHAT KIND OF FOSSIL COULD IT BE?

  9. 4.WHAT IF A FOSSIL WAS FOUND THAT HAD A COMPLETE BODY OF AN INSECT IN IT. WHAT KIND OF FOSSIL WOULD IT BE? 5. DESCRIBE THE FOSSIL THAT YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO FIND. TELL EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT IT.
