Launch & Early Commissioning • Launch 1st March 2002 at 1:07:59 UT • LEOP concluded on schedule • Switch On and data Acquisition Phase (SODAP) concluded on schedule 17 March • Mission planning and data recovery based on the Kiruna only scenario • Very few problems experienced on board the satellite ( PMC and Instruments) • Severe robustness problems experienced with the PDS (unreliable data processing and data dissemination services)

  3. Satellite Status & Plans • Satellite & Instruments • Excellent stability and availability of the Service Module and of the Payload Module. Since mid June, two planned interruptions: • During orbit inclination manoeuvre 8-12 September, (unsuccessful attempt with the PMC software update V38) • During the Leonids storm, 18-19 November ( with successful activation of the PMC V38 software and flash decontamination of SCIAMACHY) • Excellent and stable performances of the instruments, the small anomalies encountered in orbit are already corrected.

  4. Instrument Operation Anomalies • ASAR: all timing anomalies corrected except in Global Monitoring Mode; • RA-2: no accumulation of S-band echoes since several months due to use of the daily reset; • MIPAS: The Vibration Control System of the coolers is disabled, microvibrations are nominal; • GOMOS: CCD background noise acceptable at operating temperature of -40C; • Ice decontamination performed regularly on MIPAS, AATSR and SCIAMACHY (decontamination time interval increasing); • Excellent availability and stability of all instruments.

Calibration/Validation Activities • Calibration Review held successfully 9-13 September 2002 • Validation Workshop on schedule 9-13 December 2002 • Reprocessing of specific data sets related to campaign dates: • On the PDS, reprocessing on going at the LRAC, at the UK-PAC (AATSR) at the F-PAC ( RA-2) • GOMOS reprocessed by the ESL (ACRI) • Numerous updates already performed on the PDS Instrument Processor Algorithms, but some updates are late (SCIAMACHY).

Objectives and Plans set for the Last Quarter 2002 • Plan for the last Quarter 2002 • Stabilisation of the PDS towards a sustained throughput • Evolution of the operation scenario: switch over to Kiruna- Svalbard • Services to be made progressively available in NRT (PDHS-K and PDHS-E) and Offline (LRAC and PACs) • Progressive opening of the User services and phase in of the non Cal/Val PIs • Objectives for the last quarter 2002: • Fulfilling the validation objectives (PDS serving in priority all Cal/Val PIs) • ENVISAT Mission to be operational by end 2002 For a subset of products and services • ENVISAT Operations Readiness Review in December 2002

Kiruna-Svalbard Scenario • Kiruna-Svalbard Scenario activated since 6 November: • Kiruna: 9 to 10 orbits received daily, data processed and disseminated to users within 3 hours from data take; • Svalbard: 5 orbits received daily, • Global Mission data transmitted by DDS to ESRIN for pseudo NRT (delivery within 12 hours from data take through servers); • Regional Mission data (ASAR and MERIS FR) sent on tape to PDHS-E for level 0 processing (plus browse and medium resolution processing) and then archiving at PACs • The Regional Mission (ASAR and MERIS FR) benefits from the Kiruna-Svalbard scenario: • Data acquisition anywhere on the globe, using the SSR, with data dump available every orbit.

PDS Status • Kiruna PDHS-K: • Hardware upgrade performed mid September, production above 90% when no failure; • Still several weaknesses, in particular around archiving and distribution, corrections awaited; • Distribution on links (DDS and servers) should be reliable services; • Copying on media require close monitoring to become reliable. • ESRIN PDHS-E • Processing Svalbard data and Matera data (ASAR and MERIS FR direct reception); • Similar problems as in Kiruna wrt processing and data dissemination • Processing throughput to be upgraded before ARTEMIS activation.

PDS Status ( Cont’d) • LRAC (level 1b product consolidation within 2 weeks from data take) • Capable of producing the needed products ( recovery tools available); • Key facility requiring close operational monitoring (like any other PDS facility); • Currently used for campaign data reprocessing • PACs • Production of on request ASAR and MERIS FR images at PACs; • Global Mission level 2 consolidation not yet activated on a regular systematic basis. • Instrument Processors facilities (IPFs) regularly updated from Cal/Val findings

Data Distribution Current Status • Global Mission Data Products • All Meteo products on FTP server towards meteo centre (in BUFR and PDS formats) • Several NRT level 2 products on PDS servers (RA2, MIPAS, SCIAMACHY) • Product dissemination via DDS towards ESLs and PACs • Media copying of level 1B and 2 products for distribution to Cal/Val PIs: PDHS-K, UK-PAC (AATSR), D-PAC (SCIAMACHY) • Regional Mission Data Products • Limited use (on request)from PDHS-K (DDS) • Media copying of products at PDHS-K for distribution to Cal/Val PIs • ASAR and MERIS FR images produced at PACs

Phasing In of Non Cal/Val PIs • Progressive phase in of non Cal/Val PIs initiated mid September, for ASAR and MERIS FR images, • Set objective: to have 250 PIs phased-in by end 2002 • Help/Order Desk interfacing with the PIs • Access to the user service inventory and on line browse • Delivery of level 1b image data products offline via the PACs • Extensive background acquisition to build up an archive, accessible to PIs

Mission Status expected end 2002 • Kiruna/Svalbard scenario operational with sustained NRT production and distribution • LRAC operational (consolidated level 1b production) • PACs operational for ASAR and MERIS image offline service (250 PIs phased-in) • PACs ready to start Global Mission level 2 production • Product Validation check point: Validation Workshop 9-13 December at ESRIN • System ready to start servicing Distribution Entities: Operational Mission, with reliable system performances for a subset of products and services
