Why use milk replacements? • Lactose Intolerance • The most common reason • The person does not produce or have enough lactase in the digestive tract which digests the protein lactose that is in milk • Milk Allergy • Some people are actually allergic to milk • This is different than lactose intolerance • Veganism • The person chooses not to consume any animal products, including milk, for personal or health reasons

Top Two Milk Replacements • Soy Milk • Starchier than Almond Milk • High in protein • 80 calories per cup • Omega 3 and Omega 6 • B vitamins • Almond Milk • Higher in Fat than Soy • 40 calories per cup: Ideal replacement for dieters • Omega 3 and Omega 6 • B Vitamins • Higher in Vitamin E and Magnesium than Soy Milk

Soy Milk Concerning for Some • Soy Milk is known to effect hormone production and levels in people in their “reproductive years” • Known to reduce male fertility and sperm count • Known to interfere with progesterone production in expecting mothers • Other Concerns • Known to counteract the effects of chemo and other cancer therapies • Although, it can be very beneficial to people over 50 • Helps relieve postmenopausal symptoms in Women • Helps fight against prostate cancer in Men

Hemp Milk • Comes from the seeds of the hemp plant • Yes the marajuana plant: Cannabis sativa L. • No you won’t get high from drinking hemp milk • There are many different species of the hemp plant which all contain THC but also all contain CBD which blocks the psycoactive effect of THC • The species of hemp that hemp milk is made from contains low THC levels and high CBD levels

Hemp Milk continued • High in Omega 6 • High in Fiber • High in Protein • While studying this milk replacement it is thought to be known that it will not produce an allergic reaction if you have a nut allergy • Even though the milk is made from the seeds or nuts of the hemp plant • Helps prevent pain in arthritis patients • Fat free and free of cholesterol • Fights heart disease • Improves the immune system

  7. Coconut Milk • Liquid expressed from the meat of the coconut with water added • 552 calories per cup • 51g saturated fat = 254% daily recommended value • 21% daily recommended value of fiber • 11% daily recommended value of protein • Raises good cholesterol

Rice Milk • Made from pressed brown rice • 120 calories per serving • More calories is flavored • Very low fat • No cholesterol • Very low protein • Very sweet • Sometimes hard to use in place of cow’s milk in recipes because of the sweetness • Should not be given in place of formula or other milk replacements to children under age two because of the low protein content and it is low in nutrients that children needs that other milk replacements have

Kefir Milk • Fermented milk • Used for poor digestion, upset stomach, lactose intolerance, diarrhea and high cholesterol • Can cause constipation • Not to be used by people with weakened immune systems, for example people with AIDS, because of the bacteria • Contains active bacteria and yeast • Produces enzymes that effect how it is digested
