  1. Elements of Art • The elements of art are the building blocks used by artists to create a work of art.

  2. Art Elements • Line- is a mark with greater length than width. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal; straight or curved; thick or thin

  3. Art Elements • Shape- is a closed line. Shapes can be geometric, like squares and circles; or organic, like free-form or or natural shapes. Shapes are flat.

  4. Art Elements • Color- is light reflected off of objects. Color has three main characteristics: • -hue (name of the color, such as green, blue, red..etc) • -Value (how light and dark a color is) and • -intensity (how bright or dull it is)

  5. Art Elements • Texture- is the surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough or smooth, soft or hard.

  6. Art Elements • Forms- are three-dimensional shapes expressing length, width and depth. Balls, cylinders, boxes and pyramids are forms.

  7. Art Elements • Space- is the area between and around objects. The space around objects is called negative space.

  8. Art Elements • Value- Refers to the darkness and lightness of an object. • -Tint-Adding white to a color to make it lighter • -Shade-Adding black to a color to make it darker
