WHY STUDY WORLD RELIGIONS? • To better understand our world • To better understand human beings by understanding different religions • To better understand our own religion • To see what is common among the world cultures • To overcome prejudice and misunderstandings about different cultures and beliefs

  3. CHARACTERISTICS COMMON TO RELIGIONS

  4. 1. WORLDVIEW: Explains the origins and purpose of the world and of humans – where we came from through a Creation Story 2. A SUPREME BEING: Who is the creator of our world? 3. A SACRED BOOK: It contains the world view and guidelines for good living 4. A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND HUMANS: A set of purposes the God has for humankind 5. THE IDEA OF SIN: When humans disobey the God’s commands

  5. 6. THE IDEA OF SALVATION: That frees humans from sin 7. AN EXPLANATION OF THE AFTERLIFE: Can be the reunion with God or life in the supernatural 8. A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMANS: The duties we have towards one and other. 9. RITES AND CEREMONIES: (baptism, marriage etc.) 10. PRAYERS: A way believers communicate with God to gain strength and deal with problems

Journal #2 Create a page in your Journal that has a circle in the middle that says: CHARACTERISTICS COMMON TO RELIGIONS Draw 10 arrows coming from the circle and include each of the 10 Characteristics Common to Religions with a symbol for each. The symbol must be representative of the Characteristic.
