  1. Section A – The Background Using Resource 2: Where do most 45 – 64 year olds live? (1) What percentage of 30-44 year olds live in urban areas? (1) Where do most children live? (1) What is the difference between urban and rural inhabitants in the 45-64 age group? (1) Remember ..... accuracy! Use a ruler on graphs to make sure you get the right answer.

  2. Section A – The Background • Using Resource 2: • e. Describe the distribution of rural inhabitants. (6) • Remember ..... • Trend - State the general pattern shown? • Example – Refer to the data (age groups and %) • Anomaly – Is there anything that doesn’t fit the trend? • f. Compare the distribution of rural inhabitants with that of urban inhabitants. (6) • Remember ..... • When asked to compare, use comparative words: whereas, larger, more, lowest, etc.

  3. Section A – The Background • g. Explain the likely reasons for the proportion of rural inhabitants aged 16-29. (6) • Remember ..... • Point (level 1 answer, 1–2 marks) • Explain (level 2 answer, 3–4 marks) • Develop (level 3 answer, 5–6 marks) • You should look to give at least two reasons, explain them and develop them fully to explain why young adults don’t live in rural areas. • Why do more people over the age of 45 live in rural areas? (8) • As with the previous question, you are looking to develop your ideas, but since there are 8 marks for this question you should be developing three ideas fully.

  4. Section A – The Background Britain needs more houses. Develop each of the ideas below fully to explain why there is a housing crisis: More divorces  Ageing population  Population growth  Internal migration  Nimbyism Houses are too expensive  Run down houses  Two key ideas....... more houses needed, not enough being built.

  5. Section A – The Background • i. Explain how ‘Nimbyism’ is contributing to Britain’s housing crisis. (6) • Remember ..... • Point • Explain • Develop • You should look to give at least two reasons, explain them and develop them fully • To answer this question properly you need to go beyond the obvious. So “People don’t want more houses built hear them” is not good enough. • Think, Whydon’t people want more homes built close to them? • Think about: • Social – pressure on services such as schools, hospitals, etc. • Economic – impact on the value of their house • Environmental – more traffic and congestion in the area.
