Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Recommendations States should: • Develop state-specific obesity plans • Review programs and policies across state agencies to evaluate their impact on nutrition, physical activity, and obesity • Dedicate revenue to implementing obesity prevention and control programs

  7. PURPOSE • The Child Wellness Intervention Project (CWIP) promotes health and wellness in Arkansas public schools. • This program has two goals. Goal 1: to support and promote health education and quality physical education Goal 2: to implement this project in each of the educational cooperatives

SCHOOLS MUST COMMIT TO THE FOLLOWING FOR GRANT FUNDING • Increase the physical education time to a minimum of 120 minutes per week • Implement SPARK physical education curriculum and conduct fitness assessment using Fitnessgram by trained, licensed physical education teachers in the following grade categories: K-2, 3-6, or middle school • HealthTeacher.com implemented into elementary grades a minimum of 2 lessons a week or Middle school implementation of HealthTeacher.com in health classes with emphasis on tobacco education taught at the appropriate grade level

SCHOOLS MUST COMMIT TO THE FOLLOWING FOR GRANT FUNDING • Physical education teachers attending training must commit to implementing the program for a minimum of one year at the designated school • Community training consisting of superintendent, principal, physical education teacher, and three community members • Complete all components of the CWIP project evaluation

AWARDED SCHOOLS RECEIVE • SPARK curriculum and required equipment • Locking storage cabinet for all equipment • Fitnessgram software for grades 3-6 and middle schools • HealthTeacher.com curriculum • Teacher trainings on SPARK, Fitnessgram, and HealthTeacher.com • PE4Life training for school and community • Travel expenses to attend the required trainings • $250.00 stipend for up to 2 teachers per school that attended the trainings

  11. 2011-2012 CWIP Application • The Arkansas Child Wellness Intervention Project applications will be available again this fall (2010) for the 2010-2011 school year.
