Road to Wellness In Arkansas • 1992 Beginning for Arkansas Emphasis Student Health • CDC Infrastructure Grant to Arkansas • Health Action Teams funded by CDC Grant • 2002 Awareness of Obesity Epidemic concerns Governor, Speaker of House, Chairman of Public Health and Welfare Committee, Director of the Arkansas Department of Health • Act 1220 of 2003 – Efforts to change the course of obesity for future generations result in jump on Wellness Policy Requirements • CN Reauthorization of 2004 – School Wellness Policy Requirements

Impact of Arkansas Legislation • Arkansas Act 1220 of 2003 • Eliminated Elementary Vending 2003-04 • Established Statewide Committee to Make Recommendations for Public Schools with regard to Nutrition Standards for all foods available on campus • Nutrition and Physical Activity Standards (Aligns with Wellness Policy “Components”) • Required a Nutrition and Physical Activity Committee (Aligns with Wellness “Involvement” Requirement) for each school district by 2004-05

  4. Impact of Foundation Grant • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds: • Evaluation of the implementation of Act 1220 and its impact on student health (Aligns with the Wellness Policy Measurement and Evaluation)

Arkansas Wellness SY 2003-04 Accomplishments : • Elimination of Elementary School Vending (State Law) • Implementation of BMI Screening for Arkansas Students in Public Schools • Establishment of Arkansas Child Health Advisory Committee (ACHAC) • June 2004 Recommendations by ACHAC to the Departments of Education and Health

Child Health Advisory Committee(June 2004 Recommendations) • School required physical activity standards • School required nutrition standards • Campus specific nutrition and physical activity assessments • Nutrition education curriculum inclusion • Food services professional development • Continued oversight of Act 1220 compliance

Arkansas Wellness SY 2004-05 Accomplishments : • Establishment of District Nutrition & Physical Activity Committees (NPAC) same as Wellness Policy Committee Requirement • Annual BMI Screening Data • Annual School Health Index (SHI) Assessment • Promulgation of regulations for the Arkansas Nutrition and Physical Activity Standards by Arkansas Department of Education (Included six (6) public hearings) • Employment of the (5) Community Health Promotion Specialists (CHENS) in the largest Educational Cooperative to assist school districts in using the School Health Index Assessment • Employment of the (16) Community Health Nurse Specialists (CHIPS) to be located in the Education Cooperatives

Arkansas Wellness Impact SY 2005-06 Accomplishments: • Sept. 19, 2005, Effective date for AR Nutrition and Physical Activity Rules and Regulations • February 2006 Update District NPAC/Wellness Committees via email to CNU, ADE • 20 Area Meetings on USDA Wellness Policy Requirements to be conducted by CNU,ADE February –April 2006 • June 30, 2006 Deadline for submission of district Wellness Policy for SY 2006-07 – Submission can be via Wellness email address.

Arkansas Wellness Impact SY 2006-07 Future Plans: • Fall 2006 – Spring 2007- USDA Wellness Policy Grant Activities Implementation • Annual BMI Screening Data • Annual School Health Index (SHI) Assessment • February 2007 Incorporation of Wellness Priority into each District’s School Improvement Plan - Based on SHI and BMI data and Researched Based Interventions (Aligns with monitoring progress on Wellness Policies) • ADE continue monitoring of state and federal regulations
