  1. 2 Theories Theories of Intelligence & Self Determination Theory

  2. Theories of intelligence • Carol Dweck • A student’s view of the nature of intelligence correlates with behavior that either engages them in learning and challenges or tend to make them disengage from learning and avoid challenges

  3. Theories of intelligence • Fixed vs. malleable intelligence

  4. Students with a fixed view of intelligence will tend to: • Want to look smart even if it sacrifices learning • Think failure means low intelligence • Think effort means low intelligence • Less effort after difficulty • Impaired performance after difficulty • High self-defeating defensiveness

  5. Students with a malleable view of intelligence will tend to: • Want to learn new things even if risky or difficult • Think failure means low effort, poor strategy • Think effort activates and uses intelligence • Less effort after difficulty • Increase effort after difficulty • Low self-defeating defensiveness

  6. Can a student’s theory of intelligence be changed? • The role of praise • Process versus Trait Praise

  7. Self-Determination Theory • Deci and Ryan • If we feel capable of performing an activity and we value the outcome, then we will be motivated to perform that activity

  8. Self-Determination Theory • Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic motivation

  9. The role of rewards • Tangible • Verbal

  10. Provision of choice

  11. Approach to difficult material

  12. Question • How do the insights from these 2 theories change how you will act when confronted with the behaviors we will discuss today?
