  1. Wrap Ups

  2. WHERE? Comes at the end of all body paragraphs. • WHAT? Signaling to your reader you are finishing up your thoughts on this main idea. • HOW? What techniques can I do to write these?

  3. How Do I Write One? Use a smiley face trick to give a final thought or remind the reader what the paragraph was about. • Use magic 3: three ideas separated by commas, usually with a modifier (and/or). • Use figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification • Use repetition for effect: repeating a phrase • Use a hyphenated modifier – a new way of saying something using hyphens

  4. The Old Boring Way… • First and foremost I would invent a new family. My sister completely drives me crazy. For example, she is always pulling my hair when we wrestle. Also, she bites me when I try to help her get dressed for school. Besides my sister, I would change my mom and dad slightly. They are completely unreasonable: Last week they made me clean out the refrigerator AND wash the dog. That was in addition to sweeping the driveway, making dinner, and babysitting while they went out on a date. Now you see why I don’t like my family.

  5. Magic 3 • First and foremost I would invent a new family. I wish someone could help me escape this chaos or teach them how to act or at least allow me some peace and quiet.

  6. Figurative Language (metaphor) • First and foremost I would invent a new family. My family is a dying tree just waiting to fall and crush me.

  7. Repetition for Effect • First and foremost I would invent a new family. My parents are insane, my sister is insane; I really need a new, saner family!

  8. Hyphenated Modifier • First and foremost I would invent a new family. My so-called-love-you-unconditional-relatives should really just leave me alone.

  9. Why does this help me? Here is the rubric for STYLE in your writing: 4 Exceed Standard __ 20+ descriptive words per paragraph __ Added 3 Smiley Face Tricks: metaphor, simile, magic 3, personification, echo etc…. in essay __ No sentences start with the same words in each paragraph __ No dead words & uses 4 or more context clue words __ Had funny, sad, ironic, and/or prophetic statements woven into paragraphs to make the “voice” of the paper completely unique Using 3 smiley face tricks as wrap-up means you already have one of the components needed to reach Exceeding Standard for style!

  10. Add to your Cornell notes section please… • NEVER end an essay with: • “And this is why I like ….” • “That’s all I have to say about…” • “This is why I…” • “Onto my next topic…” • “My essay is about…” Basically, don’t tell me you are writing an essay, I already know, I am reading it. You need to be creative to end your thoughts.

  11. YOUR TURN - Show me what you know!Look at your rough draft or t-chart from this week’s essay. Your Task:Use a different kind of wrap-up for each body paragraph: magic 3, figurative language, repetition for effect, or hyphenated modifier. Also make sure to include other elements we have discussed for introductions and conclusions.
