  2. Socrates “the first rock star” • Teacher who roamed marketplace asking questions to citizens • Helped seek truth and self-knowledge • He threatened tradition, and at age 70 was put on trial for “corrupting the youth” • Sentenced to death; he accepted the decision because it was democratic.

  3. Plato • Socrates’ star student • Distrusted democracy because of Socrates’ execution. • Set up a school: The Academy • Wrote “The Republic”: describes ideal gov’t. • Reason is the path to knowledge. • The state should regulate every aspect of citizens’ lives.

  4. Plato • People are in 3 classes: • Workers- to produce • Soldiers- to defend • Philosophers- to be kings

Aristotle • Plato’s most famous student. • Thought gov’t should be run by the middle class. • Democracy is too “messy”- can lead to mob rule. • Wrote “Politics”: The rule of law is supreme- even rulers must obey. • Set up a school: The Lyceum. • Taught biology, ethics, math, literature, logic.
