2. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria Goals and Objectives Short term
To evaluate the efficacy of progestagen injectables for breeding control in WAD goats
To compare various options for breeding control in WAD goats
Long term
To propose a suitable breeding control strategy for small holding WAD goats keeping
To increase the productivity of traditionally managed WAD goats in Nigeria
To improve the earnings/income of the rural poor goat keepers in Nigeria
3. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria Why controlling reproductive activities in free roaming WAD goats ? To synchronise breeding activities with feed resources availability
To shorten the breeding intervals
To control breeding associated diseases/disorders
To improve post-kidding survival of dam and kid(s)
4. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria The most compelling reason ! To prevent precocious and unhealthy breeding
5. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria Available Options Prostaglandin injectables
Expensive, not readily available, require repeated treatment at short intervals
Progestagen/Progesterone Releasing Internal/Intravaginal Device (PRID) and Subcutaneous implants
Expensive, not readily available, technically demanding, retention rate problem
Immunocontraception or Antifertility vaccine
Expensive, not readily available
Progestagen contraceptive injectables
Cheap, readily available, require repeated treatment at intervals
Feeding of progestagen supplements
Expensive, not readily available
Traditional/Management methods
e.g. Culling of bucks, tethering, wearing of apron, castration
Cheap, require additional labour hours

9. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria Conclusions/Recommendations Both buck apronning and MPA injections for does could prevent mating/unwanted pregnancy in WAD goats for period longer than 3 months
Post-fertility effect of longer period oestrus suppression in WAD does with MPA injection(s) need to be further studied
