  2. Definition Four branches of Earth Science • The study of Earth and the universe around it. • Assuming that the causes of natural events can be discovered through careful observation and experimentation. • Geology • Oceanography • Meteorology • Astronomy Earth Science

  3. Geology – the study of the origin, history, processes, and structure of solid earth. • Specialized Areas: • Predicting earthquakes and volcanic eruptions • Finding coal, gas, oil, and other natural resources. • Studying fossils to learn about the Earth’s past

  4. Oceanography • The study of Earth’s oceans • Areas of oceanography: • Waves, tides, and ocean currents • The ocean floor to study Earth’s history or find minerals.

  5. Meteorology Astronomy • The study of Earth’s atmosphere, especially in relation to weather and climate. • The study of the universe beyond Earth.

  6. NEW TO EARTH SCIENCEEnvironmental Science • Study the ways in which humans interact with their environment.

  7. Do Now: Write 3 things you learned about earth science today.(Use the back of your index card from before)
