Ch. 7 Sec. 4 “John Adams’s Presidency” P. 250-253 • The Election of 1796: • Political Parties; • Groups that help elect people and shape policies • Federalist Party; • Wanted strong Federal Gov’t • Supported industry and trade • Hamilton help found • Candidates- Adams & Pinckney • Democratic-Republican Party; • Wanted to limit the power of Federal Gov’t • Farmers supported • Jefferson and Madison founded • Candidates- Jefferson & Burr

  3. Ch. 7 Sec. 4 “John Adams’s Presidency” P. 250-253 • Election of 1796: (Cont.) • Republicans called Adams a “royalist.” • Federalists accused Republicans of favoring the French. • Adams defeats Jefferson • Runner-up becomes Vice President.

Ch. 7 Sec. 4 “John Adams’s Presidency” P. 250-253 • President Adams and the XYZ Affair: • Adams sends diplomats to France to smooth over relations. • Foreign Minister (Talleyrand) refused to speak to them • Sent secret agents • Would only discuss treaty if given $250,000 (bribe) and loan for another $12 million. • Became known as XYZ Affair • Adams begins building army and navy. • American and French ships fight in Caribbean. • Eventually a treaty signed.

Ch. 7 Sec. 4 “John Adams’s Presidency” P. 250-253 • The Alien & Sedition Acts: • Laws that were said to protect U.S. • Federalists used to crush Dem-Rep. • Sedition- • Forbade anyone from publishing or voicing criticism of federal gov’t. • Liberties? • Jefferson/Madison said it was misuse of gov’t power. • Some states passed Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions. • Said Alien/Sedition acts were unconstitutional. • Acts expired a few years later.
