  2. Four Major Elements

  3. Campus Technology Upgrades • Replaced computers and printers at 40 schools in classrooms, libraries, labs, workrooms and offices, in accordance with the Technology Bond Standards for Campuses • Replaced Journalism, Photography, Drafting labs at all high schools • 9,821 computers and 4,686 printers deployed • 2,754 older computers re-purposed • 2,500 computers to be upgraded to Windows XP this spring • Staff development (e.g., CIT, Training on Wheels, eCamp) for teachers, administrators and other campus end-users emphasizes effective use of educational technologies through instructional and operational best practices

Security Projects Integrated Security Management System (ISMS) • Collaborated with project team to determine District-wide system management and design requirements • Jay system pilot successfully completed in November; started school in August with video system • Installation of video system complete at 3 schools: Jay, Stevens and Holmes • 2 schools under construction: Warren and Taft • Remaining schools in design • All 10 high schools to be completed by May • Demo of video system

Security Projects Communications System Upgrade • Cross-departmental team (Police, Technology, Facilities) determined specific requirements • RFP released January 11 for Radio Communications System and Computer-Aided Dispatch Software for Police Department/Administration • Award to vendor planned for March 28, with installation to begin in April

District-wide Technology Infrastructure Projects Network Control Center Upgrades • Facilities project to upgrade heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical, and flooring is 95% complete • Executing phased plan to move equipment into place • Moved 70 servers in support of upgrade project • Re-cabled 4,000 ft of copper and 2,000 ft of fiber cabling • Reconfigured all network server segments to enhance network traffic flow • Improved connectivity to Gradebook program • Testing new Network Traffic analyzing tool to more effectively manage bandwidth • Will optimize access to programs such as UnitedStreaming (instructional digital streaming video-on-demand service)

District-wide Technology Infrastructure Projects Redundancy • Defined requirements and participated in all design reviews of the redundant site (NISD Support Services Center) with Facilities for connectivity, power, electrical, security, etc. • Identified infrastructure support for disaster recovery; awaiting completion of site renovations for purchase of equipment

District-wide Technology Infrastructure Projects Web Portal for Data/Information Access • Installed new Internet circuit to provide 500mb throughput to Internet, new Cisco Pix firewall, and new Internet router, to facilitate improved access to • Curriculum Management System • Parent Connection (for all secondary schools) • Online Testing (TAKS, Algebra EOC, Louisiana GEE, etc.) • Web Gradebook for teachers • RiverDeep Destination Math • Implementing identity management solution as part of the network studentfile storage project; will lead to “single sign-on” access for District staff

District-wide Technology Infrastructure Projects Wide Area Network Improvements • Installed one new core switch and created 8 GB Ether channel backbone between core switches • Expanded campuses’ video conferencing capabilities • Determine requirements for other improvements: 2006 • Evaluating “next generation” Gigaman service solution • Purchase and begin implementation of other improvements: 2007

  10. District-wide Technology Infrastructure Projects Wiring/Cabling • To support implementation of: • Network Control Center Upgrade project • Campus projects that require additional network connectivity

Information Systems Projects Data Warehouse • Recently posted two professional positions to support the Data Warehouse project (Data Management Services Coordinator, Storage Systems Administrator) • Reviewed RFPs used to acquire and implement a Data Warehouse from other educational and business entities; incorporating best practices / lessons learned in project plan and draft RFP • Related Storage Area Network project to implement expanded centralized data file storage equipment and services, including secure network file storage for secondary students, is 50% complete

Technology in Education In Northside ISD, technology is used appropriately to: • Facilitate standards-based teaching, learning and assessment so that educators can focus on meeting the needs of each and every student • Improve student academic performance through relevant and authentic learning experiences in student-centered, inquiry-based classrooms • Develop higher order thinking, critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity skills • Develop technological, visual, & information literacy • Improve student motivation, engagement, attitude, and interest in learning • Address needs of low-performing, at-risk, disabled, and other special populations • Improve communication, collaboration, and productivity throughout the organization
