  1. It’s a Volcano Study!!! You are invited to go on an exploration with me. Mrs. Weaver Sixth Grade Science March 2011

  2. Invitation You are cordially invited to participate in Mrs. Weaver’s sixth grade volcano multi-genre project. Get ready to explore deep into the world’s most famous volcanoes. At the end of this project you will be well educated on what effects volcanoes have on their surroundings.

  3. You may be asking what is a multi-genre project? A multi-genre project, is a break from the ordinary. In the past you have had to write papers about what you have learned. In a multi-genre project you can show what you have learned through different genres. Examples of a genres are: poems, report cards, recipes, emails, obituaries, letters, etc. After you have researched a topic you can plug your information into one of these many genres. Writing in genres is much more interesting that writing a report on a topic.

  4. Your Assignment • Your goal is to research any volcano of your choice. • You can choose any 5 genres from the table on slide 6 to complete for your project or any other genre you want. • You will need to complete a rationale card on the five genres you choose. On this card you will explain why you chose a certain genre.

  5. Your Assignment Cont… • Be prepared to present your project to the class using PowerPoint, a movie, a website, or any other creative way you want. • Choose at least five sources for your research. Make sure you keep the information on where you got your information from. You will need to site your sources in your final project.

  6. Choose 3 genres from the table or create your own.

  7. Use this rubric to guide you as you complete your project.

  8. Rationale Card • Genre_______________________ • What does this genre tell us about your topic? • Why did you select this genre to present this information specifically? • Where did you get this information from?

  9. Tentative Plan • Students will be given the multi-genre project invitation. • Students will choose a volcano to complete their project on. • Students will be given time to complete research on their volcano during typing class one day a week, and by using the laptop cart two days a week for one week. They are also welcome to work on their research at home. • Students will begin working on their genres. They will be given a total of two weeks to complete their multi-genre projects. • Students will present their projects to their class. • They will be graded on completion of their rubric.
