  1. Effective Integration Requires Expertise…. TRAINING MODULE FOR TECH 2

  2. Tech 2 Module Module 4: Cable Installation Isaac Yeo RCDD

  3. Cable Installation Objectives After completion of this module, the participant will be able to: • Select necessary cable installation tools • Identify the areas of preparation needed before cable installation • Avoid committing against the general rules & practice for cable laying • Carry out cable installation

  4. Fish line Installers Tools Cable Rollers / Cable Stand Cable Ties Wire Tape Permanent Ink Marker

  5. Installers Tools PVC Trunking / Conduit Raise Floor Lifter Walkie Talkie

  6. Installers Tools Barriers / Danger Signs Ladder

  7. Preparatory tasks • Before installing any cable, some operations must be completed • Receiving inspection • Cable testing • Parts count • Drawings and data sheets availability • Installation team readiness • Tools availability

  8. Deliver and store all material appropriately at installation site Make sure you have correct building drawing. Familiarize yourself with it 1 4 Eventually set up the work area preparing material and tools for the job 5 Inspect pathways and check proper grounding and mechanical strength to support cables weight. Decide the method for pulling cables. Make sure you have the right tools and staff to do it. 3 Preparation work Check material for order completion & correctness, for functionality 2

  9. Define your working area, delimit it with proper sign, make sure staff understand Safety precaution to use in the area 1 Proceed with pathways and eventually Inner-duct preparation 4 Preparing the working area Identify pulling points, CPs, angles alongthe pulling way, provide Inter – mediatepulling points if necessary 5 Identify hazard present in the area and give appropriate direction to staff, supply protective equipment and usage instructions 2 Verify condition of working area and its Equipment. You must leave it in the same conditions after your Installation 3

  10. Installation – general rules

  11. Cable Pulling – “Tug of War”? • Every cable has a max- imum pulling force that cannot be exceeded !! • Every cable has a weight

  12. Installation – general rules Cable is not supposed to be pulled but to be laid down! However …… • Cable pulling by hand: • Never exceed max. pulling force • Pull continuously with same force • Do not kink

  13. Installatiaon – general rules • Cable pulled by knot: • Never exceed Max pulling force (check cable data sheet ) • Pull slowly, continuously and with same force • Do not kink • After pulling remove 1 m before knot 1 meter

  14. Tape cables in groups of 2, 3 or 4. Tape groups into a “cone” bundle 4 To pull cables in group, stack boxes or set reels on cable tree. Identify the leading cable One person station at the stack boxes or set reels to control cable rolling out. Another or more persons begin to pull out the cables and lay onto pathway 2 5 Cables Installation– general practices Determine how many cables to pull in a group. 1 Use a permanent marker to write marking on the cable before attaching the cable to pulling rope. Make 3 markings at between 8 to 12 inches apart. Mark also boxes with same identifier (to identify cables after pulling and before cutting) 3

  15. Installation – general rules Minimum separation from EMI sources Cables and Electrical equipment <2 kVA >5 kVA 2-5 kVA Unshielded power lines or electrical mac – hinenear open or non metallic pathways Unshielded power lines or electrical mac- hinenear grounded metallic pathways Power lines in a grounded metal conduit near grounded metallic pathways

  18. Suggestions: in WA side remove first 1 or 1.5m cable (this is the most stressed part Duringpulling). Cable slack in the TR can be sizedas distance between conduit entrance andfurthest corner of the room. For cable termination in the WA leave no more than 30 cm. Fix lead cable to pulling rope by using preferred method. If using a knot, tape it to easy the way into the conduit 3 Cables Installation Before attaching cables to pulling rope, check cable max pulling force, estimate run length by walking to WA and noticing corners. When pulling is finished, leave some cable slack on both end for future relocation in TR and termination in WA 5 1 Before cutting cables, mark each one with same marking on the box. Pulling force should never exceed the limits. 6 2 Start pulling cable with steady force not exceeding maximum, help cable entering conduit with correct bend radius 4
