  2. What was the NEW DEAL?? Simple answer: FDR’s plan to get America out of the Great Depression.

Where’s FDR coming from? • Rich guy who believed government should use it’s power to help the less fortunate. • As governor of New York, used that power to help—became first governor to use tax money to help the unemployed. • Some other facts/trivia • Distant cousin of TR • Had polio, in wheelchair (this is kept secret) • Only president elected to more than two terms (1932,36,40,44) • Maybe the greatest communicator ever to be president (Fireside Chats)

  5. Be aware • The New Deal wasn’t strictly “KEYNESIAN”—it was more like “Let’s experiment with a lot of stuff and see what works.”

  6. In general, NEW DEAL PLANS try to achieve one or more of three goals RELIEF RECOVERY REFORM Things that help to get rid of the symptoms of the depression. Things that help the economy get healthy again. Things that make changes to the economy that will prevent this from ever happening again.

  7. WHY DOES THE NEW DEAL MATTER? • Forever changes the relationship between Americans and their government • Creates many programs that are still around today—and creates the foundation for many others.
