  1. Understand • What is happening in the problem? • Do I understand all the words used? • What information do I need to solve the problem? • Am I missing any information that I need? • Is there extra information that I do not need?

  2. What’s the “Thinking Pattern”? Have I seen a problem like this before? Organize the information. What strategy will help me solve this problem? Act out – Use objects Draw a picture or diagram Make a table Make an organized list Guess and check Look for a pattern Work backwards Use logical reasoning Make it simpler Brainstorm Plan

  3. Solve • Write my problem in a number sentence. • Is my work easy to read and understand? • Is my work complete? • Is the strategy I chose helpful? • Do I need to use more than one strategy?

  4. Check • Did I answer the question that was asked in the problem? • Does my answer make sense? • Is my math correct? • Is more than one answer possible? • Can I explain my thinking?
