  5. Blitzkrieg means “lightning war” and was a tactic used by the German army at the beginning of World War II. Blitzkrieg

  6. Blitzkrieg Tactics - ACTIVITY • Sort the order into the correct one to describe how Blitzkrieg was carried out. • Think about what order you would need to put it in in order to achieve a quick victory.

Sort These Into A Logical Order Blitzkrieg Tactics • Heavy firepower provided by aircraft • Tanks and motorized infantry drive to their targets avoiding large centers of resistance. • Deliberate terror bombing of enemy population and propaganda offensive until surrender • Paratroopers disguised as civilians/enemy troops find routes and seize important points (e.g. bridges, crossroads) • Traditional infantry and heavy artillery attack to reduce resistance from enemy. • Reconnaissance - armoured cars and motorcycle troops probe identified weak spots in the enemy front, find best and fastest routes into rear areas and around enemy formations. • Send Military police to seize and control routes and clear refugees

Chamberlain resigns in 1940 • June 22, 1940 – France surrenders (not liberated until 1944) • Sept 1940 –As the Battle of Britain was under way - Mussolini in North Africa – aiming for the Suez Canal • Oct 1940 – May 1941 – Battle of Britain • Hitler’s plan to wipe out GB’s RAF and land 250k soldier’s on their shores • Germany’s Luftwaffe – target what first?   14. Oh, United States • Under the Lend-Lease Act (March 1941) the president could lend or lease arms to any country vital to the US. • Atlantic Charter in August 1941 (Roosevelt and Churchill) - free trade among nations, self-determination, disarmament and collective security

Mediterranean & Eastern Front • Dec 1940 – GB retaliates against Italians • March 1941 – GB retreats because of the Afrika Korps sent by Hitler – “Desert Fox” • April 1941 – Hitler persuades Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary to join Axis. He invades Yugoslavia and Greece for resisting. • June 22 – 1941-1943 – Operation Barbarossa – attack on the SU. • SU tactic – “scorched-earth” • Sept 1941 – Siege of Leningrad (movie: Enemy at the Gates) • Oct 1941 – looked towards Moscow – smart idea, right?!

Battle of Stalingrad – Aug 1942 • Hitler sent his army to seize the oil fields in the Caucasus Mountains and to capture Stalingrad (now Volgograd) – a major industrial center on the Volga River. • Nov 1942 – Germans controlled 90% of the city • Feb 1943 – some 90k frostbitten, half-starved German troops surrendered to the Soviet. The city was 99% destroyed.
