  1. Finding the devices You are going to be asked to identify some of the figurative language devices. Look at the line numbers and then write the words and the device. Don’t forget quotation marks! • Example: Metaphor:“The wind was a torrent of darkness” (1). • What figurative language device can be found in the first STANZA of the poem? • What figurative language device can be found in line 21? (Remember to type the words that show it!) • What figurative language can be found in lines 67, 68, & 72? (Remember to type the words that show it!) • What figurative language device can be found in line 92? • Write down THREE examples of imagery from the poem. Include line numbers and quotation marks! • BONUS: Read line 33 in Part I. “[T]he black cascade of her perfume came tumbling over his breast.” This is a metaphor for what? These should go in your Tri 2 Google Doc with today’s date.

  2. Post read questions • Re-read “Gentlemen of the Road” on pages 257-258. Once you have read the selection again, which word best describes the author’s tone, or attitude, about highwaymen? • Angry • Sympathetic • Approving • Admiring • Briefly explain your choice, but remember to be specific! • Think of the highwayman from the poem. What does he do that fits with the description of highwaymen from this reading? Find two details poem that fit with the description. (Example: He wears a velvet coat and nice pants, and the reading said that highwaymen dressed fancy.)
