bp misconceptions
Myth

Most children with BP escape the notice of people around them

Children with BP are usually very bright

Children who exhibit shy, anxious behavior are more seriously impaired than the hyperaggressive

Most of them need a permissive environment in which they feel accepted and can accept themselves

Facts

Whether they are aggressive or withdrawn , they are easy to spot

Few have high IQ, in fact most have a low normal IQ

Unless the withdraw is extreme, they have the best chance for social adjustments in adulthood

Research shows that a firmly structured and highly predicable (but not hostile) environment benefits

bp misconceptions1
Only highly professional psychiatrist, psychologist or social workers can help

The BP are only symptoms, the real problem are hidden deep in the chills psyche

Most teachers and parents can learn to be highly effective. Many require service of highly trained professionals as well

There is no sound scientific basis for belief in hidden causes. The child’s behavior and it’s social context are the problem. Causes may involve a child’s thoughts, feelings and perception, however.

definitional problems bp
Definitional problems - BP
  • There is no universally accepted definition of BP. Professional groups and experts have felt free to construct individual working definitions to fit their own professional purposes
  • Reasons for lack of consensus regarding definition:
  • Lack of an adequate definition of mental health and normality
  • Differences among conceptual models and theories
  • measurement
  • Relationships between BP and other impairments - f.i. Mental retardation
  • intention of definition
  • Cultural-, time and situation conditions
  • Differences in the functions of socialization agents who categorize and serve children

definition bp
Definition BP
  • There is general agreement that BP refers to:
  • Behavior that goes to an extreme - behavior that is not slightly different from the usual
  • A problem that is chronic - one that does not quickly disappear
  • Behavior that is unacceptable because of social or cultural expectations
  • Different types of definitions:
  • Operational
  • professional
  • administrative

Definition BP
  • One ecological definition:
  • Emotional disturbance is not a physical is not a physical disease located solely within a child, but we prefer to look at a disturbed ecosystem, in which disturbance can be more profitably viewed as a “failure to match” (Apter 82)
  • One “labeling” or reactive definition:
  • The deviant is one to whom that label has successfully been applied: Deviant behavior is behavior that people so label (Becker 1963)
