  2. A.Study the following examples: tanta erat multitudo ut totam aulam compleret. So great was the crowd that it filled the whole palace. Modestus erat adeo pulcher ut paucae puellae ei resistere possent. Modestus was so handsome that few girls could resist him. The groups of words in boldface are known as result clauses because they indicate a result. The verb in a result clause in Latin is always subjunctive.

Further examples: • tam stultus erat dominus ut omnes servi eum deriderent. • tantus erat clamor ut nemo iussa centurionum audiret. • agricola tot milites emisit ut hostes fugerent. • centurionem adeo timebam ut ad castra redire non auderem. • tot servos habebas ut eos numerare non posses. • ancillae nostrae tam diligenter laborabant ut eas saepe laudaremus.

  4. C. Notice that in the first part of each sentence there is a word that signals a result clause is coming. For example, study the first sentence in Section A. tanta, so great, is a signal for the result clause ut totam aulam compleret. In the last three sentences in Section B, what are the signal words? What do they mean?
