  3. BACKGROUND The National Information Communication and Infrastructure Policy and Plan(2001-05) envisaged the Rwanda Academic and Research Network – Linking all Institutions of Higher Education into a Wide Area Network with an International Gateway M. Bayingana

  4. SOME OF ICTs in Education OBJECTIVES • To promote R&D work in the Universities and Colleges. • To facilitate promotion of academic and research collaboration and twining arrangements with International Centers of Excellence. • To improve and upgrade the ICT resources and Infrastructure of Higher Educational Institutions M. Bayingana

  5. CURRENT STATUS • KIST & NUR have Campus Fibre Networks and both use Campus Vsats for their International Gateway. KIE is implementing Electronic Distance Education and Learning in the Country. • They are yet to be linked into a Wide Area Network • National Fibre Network is 100km from Kigali (KIST Location) and 50 km short to reach Butare (NUR Location) M. Bayingana

  6. CHALLENGES & CONSTRAINTS • Costly Infrastructure • Technical Capacity • Organization Issues • Financial Resources M. Bayingana

  7. Activities Anticipated to Compliment RARN(REDNET) • National Fibre Network • Operationalization of the EASSy Project in 2007 • It’s anticipated that Universities will subscribe for bandwidth capacity from EASSy through RITA/RINEX • ICT Capacity Building M. Bayingana

  8. Expectations from the Workshop • To Learn on benefits experienced by existing NRENs • To Discuss on Challenges facing emerging or existing NRENs • Proposition of Way Forward for NRENs in Africa M. Bayingana
