  3. The aim • Raise awareness about ‘Carers Matters –Everybody’s Business’ • Describe what it is and who it is for • Explore why and how it can help your organisation/you in your role

  4. Who are Skills for Care and Skills for Health? • Skills for Care is the national lead body for workforce development in adult social care in England. • Skills for Health is the national lead body for workforce development in health care in the United Kingdom. • We both ensure that the workforce in our sector has the right skills and knowledge to do an excellent job.

  5. The Carers Strategy 2008 • Ambition by the Government to raise awareness of carers issues with a wide range of staff within all types of organisations • Specific commitment to ensuring that “key workers across the board, from health to housing” would receive training to better support carers • The ‘training for professionals on carers’ project was therefore commissioned by The Department of Health, with the work carried out by Skills for Care and Skills for Health.

The project had 3 aims… • To develop a comprehensive learning/training resource, which can be used as a basis for the provision and commissioning of training, rolled out across public service, independent and voluntary employers • To design and implement a plan for awareness raising across the identified parts of the workforce • To evaluate the impact of learning on the knowledge of the workforce

  7. Building a firm structure always starts with good foundations… The Common Core Principles for Working with Carers:

Building the next layer… • Based upon these principles, Skills for Care and Skills for Health have developed ‘Carers Matter – Everybody’s Business’, a learning and development framework with supporting resources. • It is intended to help employers introduce greater carer awareness and carer friendly practises into their organisations by training their staff. • It was developed in partnership with carers organisations, including Crossroads Care, Carers UK and Princess Royal Trust for Carers

  9. Carers Matter – Everybody’s Business Carers Matter – Everybody’s Business contains ; • general information about carers’ issues • tools to help employers assess their workforce’s differing training needs • advice on planning and delivering learning, including sample resources

Carers Matter – Everybody’s Business • Has a wide variety of uses e.g. information gathering, identifying learning needs, commissioning and delivering learning • Provides a set of common core principles for working with carers • Highlights innovative practice • Supports carers involvement in the provision of quality support services

Carers Matter – Everybody’s Business • Provides knowledge to demonstrate National Occupational Standards (NOS) • Provides learning for some units on the Qualification and Credits Framework (QCF) • Links to End of Life and Self Care Principles • Supports Common Induction Standards 2010 (Standard 1)

  12. Structure • Is a flexible user friendly resource presented in 3 parts • Part 1 – information/guidance for senior managers • Part 2 – planning and resources for those in a learning and development role • Part 3 – tools and resources to support learning

Part 2 – planning and resources for those in a learning and development role • The common core principles in more detail and what they mean in practice • Ideas about building a business case • Six steps to developing staff in relation to carers • Ideas about adapting the materials for local use, • Involving carers in developing staff • Guide to evaluating the learning

  15. Part 3 – tools and resources to support learning • Sample learning and development materials, Carer awareness Activities • Enhanced learning activities • Outlines for specialist learning • Evaluation • Good practice examples
