  1. Status report of ALADIN at CHMI Filip Váňa

  2. Highlights • resolution upgrade of ALADIN/CE • new physical & dynamic package upgrade • ALADIN/MFSTEP operational • verification scores available from July 2002 • products for RODOS • low-level cloudiness improvement • PBL height diagnostics (Ayotte et al.)

  3. Computing environment HPCF NEC SX6/4B-32 data handling system Sun Fire 4810 Sun StorEdge 9910 archive server Sun E250 Qualstar TLS 58264 SAN 1 Gb Ethernet Internet 2 Mbps RMDCN WAN MSS Sun cluster Linux cluster

  4. Operational suite • ALADIN/LACE domain • 309x277 grid points, 159x143 truncation (linear) • 9 km resolution, 43 vertical levels • time step 360 s • CY25T1_op4 • DF blending + incremental DFI on short cut-off • hourly DIAGPACK – surface parameters + CAPE, MOCON, KO-index (based on SYNOP data)

  5. Operational suite Main changes during 2004 • NEW MODEL RESOLUTION (January 2004) • 12.2 km (quadratic grid) → 9 km (linear grid) • 37 model levels → 43 model levels • Δt = 514.286 s → Δt = 360 s • CHANGES IN MODEL PHYSICS AND DYNAMICS (September 2004) • new parameterization of the GWD and orographic lift • replacement of envelope by the mean orography • linear spectral diffusion mostly replaced by SLHD • quasy-monotonous specific humidity interpolation • consistency improvement in the radiation scheme • evaporation over sea enhancement by gustiness • roughness modification over sea

  6. MFSTEPMediterranean Forecasting System Toward Environmental Predictions • 589x309 grid points • 299x159 truncation (linear) • 9.5 km resolution • 37 levels • coupled to ARPEGE, 3h coupling period • continuous long cut-off blending cycle • MFSTEP configuration similar to ALADIN/CE except: • small difference in radiation scheme settings • no QM interpolation of specific humidity • IDFI already in assimilation cycle • production forecast 1x week to +120h
