Membership Development Strategy The aims of the membership development strategy are to:- • Outline our membership community and the opportunities associated with becoming a member • Continue to build and manage an active membership base • Ensure that communication with members is effective and relevant • Provide the resources to support membership • Take account of other Trust strategies linked to membership development, e.g. the patient and public involvement strategy and the equality and diversity statement • Take account of Monitor requirements

Member recruitment 2007/08 Current total membership currently 19, 239 • Public 13, 171, Staff 6068 • By constituency • East Devon, Dorset and Somerset 4,843 • Exeter and South Devon 5,154 • Mid North West Devon and Cornwall 3,174 • By county • Devon 12, 760, Cornwall 121, Dorset 81, Somerset 209 • Mailing to approx 17,900 prospective new members recently undertaken

Membership engagement activities • Focus groups – information obtained from members used to inform recent infection control work, and plans for revamp of concourse • Medicine for members – new series of health related talks from clinical professionals • 16 April Rheumatology, Dr Richard Hague • 23 July Diabetes, Dr Mark Daly • Constituency meetings continue – for review • Speaker attendance at voluntary sector meetings, e.g. Probus groups

  5. For 2008/09 • Continue roll-out of Medicine for Members • Review of membership activities, including range of meetings, to take place in May • Review of membership/PPI strategies and joint working to be completed by July • Open day 5 July with focus on fifth year as a foundation trust, and 60th birthday of the NHS, members especially invited • RD&E stand at Mid Devon Show, 26 July, publicised to members • Members to receive summary strategic directions document, outlining forward plans • Governors Annual Report 2007/08 as part of production of RD&E Annual Report, informing members of governor activities in greater detail

  6. Governor elections 2008 • Electoral Reform Services commissioned to run elections • Vacancies in all public constituencies and two staff constituencies • Meetings for prospective governors 1 and 8 April • Close of electoral register and nominations 2 May • Balloting 26 May – 13 June • Election results declared 16 June
