The student is expected to: (A) predict and describehow different types of catastrophic events impact ecosystems such as floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes;

  3. A catastrophic • Horrible natural event

  4. A Ecosystem • All the abiotic and biotic factors interacting with each other in a particular area

  5. A Catastrophic Event • An event such as a hurricane, flood, or tornado that causes a sudden or dramatic change to the Earth’s surface

  6. A Flood • An overflow of water that submerges land

  7. A Hurricane A violent tropical cyclone storm with torrential rains and high winds caused by temperature difference of ocean water and air.

  8. A salinity • The amount of dissolved salt in a body of water

  9. A Storm surge • An abnormal rise of the sea along a shore, caused primarily by the winds of a storm

  10. A Tornado • A violent, spiraling cyclone storm seen as a funnel shaped cloud that causes lots of damage.

  11. Weathering • The breaking down of rocks into small particles such as sand and pebbles.

  12. Erosion • The movement of small rock particles from one location to another by means of water, ice, or wind.

  13. Deposition • When particles carried by water, ice, or wind are deposited (dropped) in another location

  14. Watershed • the land area that drains into a particular lake, river, or ocean.
