  2. Conduction When frying up one of Uncle Harry’s famous sunny-side up eggs, conduction occurs. Conduction takes place within materials that are in direct contact. When a pan is on a burner, the burner heats up the pan with heat flowing into the pan from the burner, which is directly touching it, which cooks up the egg, which is also in direct contact with the pan. After a solid two minutes, it will then be done.

  3. Conduction to Convection Hot pasta is the key to Grandma Louise’s chicken alfredo. To have the pasta fully cooked in boiled water, conduction then convection occurs. We already know what conduction is, when heat is transferred through direct contact. When the water in the pot is placed on a hot burner, conduction occurs, heating up the water (heat from the burner flows into the water). Then, because the water is boiling, convection currents form. Convection occurs when a fluid is heated, as it expands and less dense. Because this happens, the fluid rises. Warmer fluid floats on top of cooler fluid and cooler fluid then moves to the bottom and this process continues. Then, the pasta is cooked.

  5. Radiation to Conduction When one touches Dad’s fresh burgers from under the hot lights to keep them toasty, the person feels the warmth. This involves radiation to conduction. Radiation is heat transfer through electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves from the hot lights go into the burgers. Then, once one finally grabs a hold on one of our juicy burgers, the heat flows from the warm burger into the person’s hands because they are in direct contact.

  6. Radiation Today at the Diner, it is very sunny outside. When facing the sun, one’s body absorbs the radiant energy from the huge source of radiation. Electromagnetic waves from the sun flow into the person’s body. Nothing in the restaurant business is better than having a sunny for our customers…

  7. Radiation to Conduction After eating one of the best meals you have had in your entire life, your feet begin to hurt because you have eaten so much food and you take off your shoes. You also take about 50 after-meal mints because they are so good. Because you have become tired and uncoordinated, you drop all of them on the hot pavement, heated by radiant energy from the sun entering the pavement. When your feet touch the pavement, it feels extremely hot because your bare feet have the heat from the pavement enter them. BEWARE! Never eat too much!
