  1. Understandings • The human body is a large system that is made up of ten separate systems. • Each body system has a vital role in keeping the body functioning healthily. • The choices we make affect the healthy functioning of our bodies.

  2. Questions: • How do our bodies grow, change and work? • How do we grow and change throughout our lives? • How do our body systems work? • Why is it important to keep our body systems healthy? • What things affect our bodies in positive or negative ways? • How do our choices affect our health? • Why do people sometimes make poor choices?

  3. What does it mean to be fit for life? Good health means being free from sickness and disease, so a healthy lifestyle is one which keeps us that way. If we are healthy, we feel good within our bodies and about ourselves. This is also called ‘wellbeing’. The three things which have the greatest effect on our health are: • the food and drink we consume • the amount of exercise we take • the amount of sleep and relaxation we have.

  4. A healthy lifestyle is all about balance – the right amount of food, drink, exercise, sleep and relaxation.

  5. A well balanced diet provides all the essential nutrients needed for a healthy body. On the inside, the organs and body systems will work efficiently, making us feel better. On the outside, we will look good with bright eyes, shiny hair, healthy skin and strong teeth and nails.

  6. When we exercise, the brain releases endorphins which make us feel good.

  7. During sleep, the body is busy growing and repairing damage caused by daily activities.

  8. Fresh air is important for healthy lungs which send oxygen into the bloodstream. If the air we breathe is polluted, our blood will be affected and so will our health.
