Background University of Florida Jacksonville Physicians Inc (UFJPI) – Multi-specialty physician group 400 primary care doctors and specialists 33 primary and specialty satellite practice Other Large Medical Group – Multi-specialty physician group 300 primary care doctors and specialists 19 locations Allscripts TouchWorks Electronic Medical Records Allscripts TouchWorks software is a modular electronic medical record that is used to automate the most common physician activities including prescribing, dictating, capturing charges, ordering labs and viewing results, providing patient education, and documenting clinical encounters.

Background UFJPI – Other Large Medical Group - Practice Commonalities Multi-phase and modular EMR rollout - TouchWorks EMR implementation across all clinic sites Initial Rx+ Prescription Module implementation consisted of a Computer generated facsimile solution followed by addition of bidirectional EDI connectivity Active wide scale roll-out early 2007 – Large practice sites that have in-house: Trainers that provide both on and off site training Support staff that provide first line Support assistance to clinic providers Dedicated to e-prescribing roll-out and success

Survey – 19% Response Rate Conducted web-based survey Survey developed by SureScripts and approved by internal decision makers at both practices Distributed by medical director / practice champion Survey time period: Other Group - July 18th to Aug 3rd UFJPI - July 25th to Aug 10th Number of people contacted to participate: Total of 480 Number of people responded: Total of 90 responded

Conclusion Practices using EMRs with e-prescribing believe bi-directional electronic connectivity with pharmacy has substantial benefits over all other methods of managing patient prescriptions- Increased efficiency particularly for prescription refills Increased overall satisfaction Better communication with pharmacies Improved quality of care Improved patient safety Improved efficiency of care Reduced call backs from pharmacies for clarification Time savings Do not have to deal with fax breaking down or running out of paper Improved accuracy Made my job easier

    15. Patient-related Direct communication with pharmacy and convenience for patients. Patients get drugs they need in timely manner and safer. Quickly determine when patient has been in/is scheduled to come in and tailor refills. More reliable than faxing – patients happier.
