  3. The Beginning Four Ulysses High School students kill in automobile crash. The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the four high school girls who died Thursday morning in a tragic car accident. The girls, on their school lunch break, were struck by a semi on the east side of the city Thursday. Another girl in the car was injured.

Enforcement • Without enforcement, SAFE will fail. • It makes Law Enforcement more likely to become aware of the law. • Law Enforcement are more likely to obey the law and buckle-up themselves. • Enforcement filters up to the Adult and down to the younger children. • It allows Law Enforcement to observe the success and or failure of the program.

  14. 94 Schools in 29 counties participated and completed the SAFE program. • Over 670* Students were involved in leading their local SAFE Programs • 40,100 Students attended participating schools and heard the safe messaging * Number based on schools’ reports. Not all schools reported.

  16. Results96% of all the participating schools experienced positive change in the number of seat belts used. The average baseline survey for all the schools was 63.9% and the average final survey was 78.2%, making the average increase across all of the participating schools 14.2%.

  18. Crawford County Crawford county has the longest running SAFE program. The graphs below show the crashes and fatalities experienced in this county since SAFE began.

  21. TEEN DEATHS DUE TO CRASHES IN 2011 • 41 Deaths • 76 % were unrestrained • Those involved in crashes that were unharmed or had no life threating injuries,were restrained 92% of the time. • LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH!
