  1. Pablo Picasso Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso

  2. Picasso Overview • No other artist is more associated with the term Modern Art than Pablo Picasso. • He created thousands of paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics during a time span of about 75 years. • For many Picasso is the greatest art genius of the twentieth century. • He influenced and dominated the art of the twentieth century like no other modern artist.

  3. Early Years • Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain to Jose Ruiz y Blasco and Maria Picasso Lopez. • He started painting and drawing at a very young age. • Picasso’s father was a painter and professor of art, as well as the curator of a local museum and recognized Pablo’s talent at his young age.

  4. Picasso's first painting at age 8, Picador (1889).

  5. He became his father's pupil in La Coruña at the age of 10. • Pablo’s father taught him the basics of formal and academic art training. • Attended the Academy of Arts in Madrid, but dropped out within a year of joining it.

  6. Made his first trip to Paris in 1900. Lived with a friend, Max Jacob. These were hard times for Picasso, who burned many of his paintings to keep himself warm. • Picasso’s paintings were classified into various ‘periods’ based on the moods and style of the paintings. These were affected by his personal and love life.

  7. Blue Period • Shortly after moving to Paris from Barcelona, Picasso began painting with shades of blue and blue-green, which evokes a sad tone. • The psychological trigger for these depressing paintings was the suicide of Picasso's friend Casagemas. • The Blue Period work is quite sentimental, but we must keep in mind that Picasso was still in his late teens, away from home for the first time, and living in very poor conditions.

  8. “Le Gourmet” 1901 “The Tragedy” 1903

  9. Rose Period • In 1905-6, Picasso's palette began to lighten considerably, bringing in a distinctive beige or "rose" tone. • The subject matter is less depressing. • First appearances by the circus performers and clowns that will populate Picasso's paintings at various stages through the rest of his long career.

  10. “Girl in Chemise” “Harlequin”

  11. Working alongside his friend Georges Braque began to express space in geometrical terms, taking objects apart and analyzing them. • These initial efforts at developing this almost sculptural sense of space in painting are the beginnings of Cubism.

  12. Cubism Period • In late 1906, Picasso started to paint in a truly revolutionary manner. • Inspired by Cézanne's flattened depiction of space.

  13. “Harlequin” “Three Musicians”

  14. Later Periods • 1912-1919 – Synthetic Cubism Period – began to use collage in his art, adding paper fragments or newspaper pages. • 1930’s – Return to neo-classical style of painting. • 1950’s – Reinterpreting the works of great masters, including Velazquez, Goya, Manet and Declcroix. • 1968-1971 – produced paintings and etchings in neo-expressionist style. When these paintings were made, they were dismissed by critics.

Olivier appears in many of his Rose period paintings. • Left Olivier for Marcelle Humbert, whom he called Eva Gouel. Picasso was devastated by her premature death from illness at the age of 30 in 1915. • Married Olga Khokhlova a ballerina in the summer of 1918.

  21. Had a son, Paulo with Khokhlova, who would grow up to be a motorcycle racer and chauffeur to his father. • Met 17-year-old Marie-Thérèse Walter in 1927 and began a secret relationship with her. They had one daughter together. Walter hanged herself four years after his death • Separated from Khokhlova soon after he met Walter, but they remained legally married until her death in 1955. • Met young art student Françoise Gilot in 1944. They had two children. Gilot, frustrated with Picasso's relationships with other woman and his abusive nature left him in 1953.

  22. Began a relationship with 24 year old Genevieve LaPorte in 1951. She left him two years later. • Met Jacqueline Roque. She became his 2nd wife in 1961. He painted more than 70 portraits of her during their time together.

  23. Picasso’s Death • Pablo Picasso died on 8 April 1973 in Mougins, France, while he and his wife Jacqueline entertained friends for dinner. His final words were “Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can’t drink any more.” • Devastated and lonely after the death of Picasso, Jacqueline Roque took her own life by gunshot in 1986 when she was 60 years old.
