  2. Location Deletion of a section on the short arm of chromosome 5. The larger the deletion the greater the severity of the disability.

  3. Symptoms Cri du chat, meaning cry of the cat, is named after the infant’s cry, which is high pitched and sounds like a distressed cat. Other symptoms include: • Small head and jaw • Mental retardation • Wide set and downward slanting eyes • Slow development of motor skills

  4. Genetics Only in about 10% of all cases is cri du chat inherited from the parents. Usually the deletion occurs during the formation of gametes or the early stages of embryonic development, and infected people have no history of the disease in their family.   5. Life with cri du chat There is no cure for cri du chat, but with physical and language therapy sufferer’s condition can improve. Also there are organizations, such as the 5p- support group, dedicated to helping families cope with the disorder, leading to a happy and relatively fulfilling lifestyle.

  6. History of the Disorder • French geneticist, Jerome Lejeune discovered the disorder in 1963. • Bryan Cooper is a multimillionaire with the cri du chat disorder.
