  1. From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Guardians, The Forge faculty and staff want to wish you and your family a good ending to the school year. We hope that you have a fun and relaxing summer. • Mr. Hale • Guidance Corner: • Summer Fun Facts • Hard to believe that summer is around the corner. With our Winter this year, it seemed as though summer vacation was only a dream. With school coming to a close, students are getting restless as their minds begin to wonder with all that summer has to offer; long days, swimming, picnics, vacations and no school. It’s important to keep students’ mind and bodies active over summer, so they can retain all the information they have learned. In honor of summer and keeping minds active, here are a few Summer fun facts; • -The dog days of Summer refer to the weeks between July 3 to August 11, it is named after the Dog Star Sirus in the constellation of Canis Major. • - Mosquitoes, summer’s pest, have been around for more than 30 million years • -Watermelon is a vegetable and is part of the squash family. The average American eats 15 pounds of watermelon a year, and watermelon is 92% water • -Frank Epperson invented popsicles in 1905, when he accidently left a mixture of powdered soda and water overnight and it froze. The frozen treat became a huge hit. • -In the 19th century Horace Mann created summer vacations for schools. Until that time depending on the location of the school, breaks came quarterly for schools in towns and coincided with planting and harvest seasons for rural schools. • I wish you, great picnics, lots of watermelon, bug spray, popsicles, and pools! And thank Horace Mann for giving us this summer break. Stay active, keep learning, be safe and most importantly have fun! –Mrs. McGrady • Moving over Summer? • Remember to let school know your new address as soon as you move, even if it is within Palmyra Area School District. Then you will be assured of receiving important information that is mailed over the summer months. • Dr. Seuss Quote: How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its noon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flown. How did it get so late so soon? • Parent Reminders: • *School will be closed on Monday May 26,20134 for the Memorial Day Holiday. School will resume on Tuesday May 27, 2014. • *Last Day of school is Tuesday, June 10, 2014 Dismissal will be at 12:00 Noon. Breakfast will be served that day, but No Lunches will be served due to the early dismissal. Have a Safe and enjoyable summer! • *The 2014-15 school year will start on • Monday, August 25, 2014. • Should you need to come to school during the summer, please note that summer office hours are limited to Monday through Thursday. • SUMMER READING OPPORTUNITIES; • The Palmyra Area School District is pleased to offer educational enrichment programs for K-5 grade students this summer. Research shows that students that read throughout the summer maintain the levels of reading that they worked so hard to achieve during the school year. Please consider helping your child maintain their reading and writing levels over the summer months. All students who participate will be recognized in the fall. For activities that are completed, students will be given raffle tickets to be entered into drawings to win small prizes. Specific information on these programs is available on the district web site, under the elementary division. • Nurse’s Notes: • As we get warmer weather, please keep in mind that Palmyra Area School District recommends flip flops not be worn to school. Your children may want to wear sandals without socks, and if they do please arm them with some band-aids for new blisters that might form. Also, remember to put sunscreen on your children and send water bottles to school so they can hydrate throughout the day. One last thing…please inform your nurse whenever your student has a health change or new diagnosis. There are times when students have come to school with slings or crutches and I was unaware they had fractures! We want our students to stay happy and healthy, and knowing of changes in their health helps me to provide the best care. It’s been a great year with them and I wish you all a wonderful summer!
