THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS
RELAX! Know what you need to do for the college application process
TIPS FOR THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS • Stay organized. • Keep track of user names/passwords, essay topics and deadlines for each college. • Get your essays done over the summer! • Do final editing to your resume/activity sheet. • If you will be playing Division I or II sports in college, register for the NCAA on eligibilitycenter.org
Register for the October 6th test. • The November 3rd test date is also an option. It is not too late! • YOU MUST SEND official test scores to your colleges.
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to know if the schools that you are applying to require SAT SUBJECT TESTS. • Check the websites of each school that you are applying to for their specific requirements.
ACT You may want to consider taking the ACT if: • Your vocabulary is not as strong as your reading. • You are more academic than “test savvy.” The ACT is said to be more curriculum-based and thus found to be more straightforward.
One application that can be sent to over 450 schools. • www.commonapp.org • Will be available on August 1st. • All students must get an account at www.commonapp.org even if they are not using the Common Application in order for the guidance department to send your transcripts electronically.
NAVIANCE • You should be keeping a list of schools in “colleges I’m thinking about”. • In late August, you will have the ability to move colleges from “colleges I’m thinking about” to “colleges I’m applying to” by clicking on Move to Application List. • Do not add schools to “colleges I’m applying to” until you have completed the application for the school. • You will also need to complete the FERPA release on Naviance. The FERPA has to do with waiving your rights to access your recommendations.
If you don’t have a Naviance login and password, please see your guidance counselor as soon as possible.
TEACHER RECS • Ask two teachers in person • Give them the teacher recommendation request form available on Naviance or the Guidance Website under Senior Forms. • Ask teachers, if they require any additional information such as an activity sheet, etc. • In late August, in Naviance under “colleges I’m applying to”, you will also need to electronically request the teacher recommendations.
COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATIONS • You must complete the Student Brag Sheet online on Naviance. • If possible, have your parent complete the Parent Brag Sheet on Naviance. • Your recommendation will not be written unless the Student Brag Sheet is completed.
COLLEGE APPLICATIONS For colleges that do not use The Common Application, apply directly using the school’s application on the school’s website. Applications for Fall 2013 should be available in late August. Complete the online application. In September, you will be given a copy of your transcript and you will need to self-report your grades online.
TYPES OF APPLICATIONS Early Decision – apply early (usually before November 1), binding, receive decision by January 1. Early Action – apply early (usually before November 1) and receive decision by mid-Dec. Regular Decision – December through March. Rolling Admissions – no set deadline.
TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS • Complete a Transcript Request Form available on the Guidance Website or Naviance under Senior Forms and give to your Guidance Counselor. • Do this AFTER you have completed the school’s application.
COLLEGE APPLICATION STATUS • It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to monitor your application status. • This can be done online by creating an account at each of the schools to which you are applying. • You should monitor that the schools you are applying to have received your transcripts, required documents, test scores, etc.
