  3. What is the School in Italy? • Founded in 1960 by Middlebury College • Headquartered in Florence • 3 cities to choose from: • Ferrara (2001) • Florence (1960) • Rome (2009) • Florence: Sede + Italian universities • Ferrara and Rome: Italian universities • Language Pledge

  4. Florence • Population: 375,000 • Capital of Tuscany • Jewel of the Renaissance

  5. C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in Italy: Florence • Middlebury Sede located in the Palazzo Guigni in the academic heart of the old city • ~5 undergraduate students and 20 graduate students per semester • 4 staff members

  6. Florence cont’d • Academic Program • Direct enrollment at University of Florence (25,000 students) • Combination of University of Florence and Sede courses (minimum of two liberal arts courses at the University of Florence) • Tutorials for university courses

Starr-Middlebury School in Italy: Ferrara/ Rome • Direct enroll program, take all courses at: • the University of Ferrara (12,000 students) or • University of Rome “La Sapienza” (145,000 students) • 6-12 (Ferrara)/ 5 (Rome) undergraduate students per semester • No on-site staff; no Sede • 3 courses + Middlebury only language/literature course (year-long students take this Fall only) • Tutorials for university courses

Costs/Money Matters • Expect to spend the equivalent amount of money in Italy as you do at Middlebury • Semester tuition charge will be $12,900 • In addition you will have out-of-pocket expenses paid directly by you in Italy for housing, personal expenses, travel, etc: • Ferrara ~$9,875* • Rome/ Florence ~$12,800 • Year tuition charge will be $25,800 • In addition you will have out-of-pocket expenses paid directly by you in Italy for housing, personal expenses, travel, etc: • Ferrara ~$17,590* • Florence/Rome ~$22,430* • $1,350study abroad fee/ semester • Student Financial Services uses our estimated figures when determining award packages; Contact Office of Financial Aid x5158 • Financial aid meeting: October 24, 4:30-5:30, Johnson 304 *Out of pocket expenses are 12-13 estimates

  14. Application Requirements • Declared major • GPA Requirement • B- average overall • B average in your major(s) • B average in your Italian courses • Minimum completion of ITAL 0252 • Language course enrollment during semester prior to study abroad

Study Abroad Application • Study Abroad Application Deadlines • Meet with your major advisor by January 7th • All parts submitted online no later than February 1st • What are the components of the application? • Completed Application (Available in 127 Sunderland) • Major Advisor Approval Form • Language Assessment from current or most recent language professor • Academic rationale/study abroad essay
