  4. Characteristics of Functional Relationships • Social with each other, friends, and family • Take part in activities outside the relationship • Enjoy one another’s company • Positive outlook on life (realistic)

  5. Characteristics of Functional Relationships • Problem solve (without blaming) • Express affection and praise • Flexibility (can adapt to different situations) • Communication is the number one priority

  6. Dysfunctional Relationships are… Unhealthy and lack happiness

  7. Characteristics of Dysfunctional Relationships • High conflict (hostile) with one another • Lack of activities and happy time together • Discouragement and disappointment • Jealousy

  8. Characteristics of Dysfunctional Relationships • Lack of open and safe communication • Gender bias (‘men’s work’, ‘women’s work’) • Expectations based on gender • Domestic violence, dating violence

The RED FLAGS of a Relationship • Read pg. 181-184 in the 6 Decision textbook Section 5: “How Will I Know When it’s Time to Break Up” • Once you have finished reading, see the teacher for handout. Fill in the red flags using the textbook as your guide. • We will continue with this discussion next class.
