  1. Open House Presentation 2013-2014 Created by the First Grade Team Mrs. Jurewicz’s Class 2013-2014

  2. First Grade is the perfect place for us to...

  3. In First Grade... Our days are filled with lots of hands on learning! We believe that the workshop model of teaching provides students with the best, multi-tiered, learning support. Thus our class engages in Readers’ Workshop, Writers’ Workshop, and Math Workshop.

  4. Reading Instruction The most substantial part of our first grade curriculum is teaching students the joys of reading, and creating a solid foundation for reading success. We believe that a solid reading foundation is based on five Big Ideas: • Phonemic Awareness • Alphabetic Principle • Fluency and Accuracy in Text • Vocabulary • Comprehension

  5. Readers’ Workshop During our reading instruction students have the choice of five different independent areas in which to work and improve their individual skills. Readers’ Workshop is a time for teachers to work one on one and in small groups to develop individual reading skills.

  6. Daily 5 Read to Self- During this time, students are reading independently, building their reading stamina and learning how to select good fit reading books. Read to Someone-Students read with a partner and they learn how to read three different ways. They learn to discuss their reading and share their thoughts. Work on Writing- Students work individually on a writing of their choice. This give the students an opportunity to engage in daily writing practice. Word Work- During this time, students use a variety of materials to work on phonics, spelling, and vocabulary development. Listen to Reading- Students use various media (laptops, IPads, IPods) to listen to text. Students develop reading fluency along with being exposed to new vocabulary.

  7. Writers’ Workshop A favorite part of the first grade day is Writers’ Workshop. During this time students develop their skills as a writer by participating in a whole group mini lesson on writing, then working independently or with partners to create personalized writing pieces. Teachers use the work time to confer with writers and help them develop their skills even further.

  8. Writers’ Workshop This year during Writers’ Workshop we will be learning about: • Launching the Writers’ Workshop • Revision • How-To Books • Apprenticeship Writing • Opinion Letter Writing • Informational Books • Writing Like a Scientist:Investigation Reports

  9. Math Workshop Math Workshop allows for student exploration, small group, and teacher led investigations. Our math learning revolve around the following units: • Building Number Patterns and Meaning • Building Number Sense • Measurement (Length and Time) • Organizing and Representing Data • Basic Facts and Place Value • Geometric Shapes, Patterns, and Attributes • Using Equivalence and Place Value

  10. Homework Daily reading at home is crucial to your child’s success in first grade. To assist with first grade reading we have two ways to help grow your reader at home… • FRED Books- Leveled books that are sent home weekly and are to be read nightly with your child. • Raz-Kids.com- An amazing interactive tool that we have access to is Raz Kids. This site provides leveled books, comprehension quizzes, and a technological reward room.

  11. Classroom Blog The best way to keep abreast of all of the happenings in our classroom is to subscribe to our classroom blog. This site is updated weekly, and most often several times in a week. Subscribing to our blog is super easy and ensures that you will always be in the loops of what is happening in our classroom. tessajurewicz.edublogs.org
