  2. Atomic Orbitals • These are the areas of probability where an electron COULD be. • They come in different shapes and you need to know the shapes and the names. • Mr. Baron will now show the shapes…

  7. Quantum Numbers • These numbers specify what/where the orbitals are. • They also specify the properties of the electrons. • There are 4 of them. The first three quantum numbers describe the main energy level (floor of hotel), the shape (type of room), and the orientation of an orbital (which of the rooms).

  8. First Quantum Number: Principal Quantum Number • Symbolized by n. • Indicates the main energy level that an electron is on. • As n goes up, the distance of the electron from the nucleus goes up. • The MAXIMUM # of electrons on an energy level is calculated by 2n2. • This is the hotel floor.

  9. Second Quantum Number:Angular Momentum Qntm. # • This indicates the shape of the sublevel that the electron is on. • These are the shapes we mentioned earlier (s – p – d – f). • These are the types of rooms (super, pretty, dynamic, fabulous). • Each energy level has n sublevels.

  10. Third Quantum Number:Magnetic Quantum Number • This describes which orbital. • s h a s 1 o r b i t a l p h a s 3 o r b i t a l s d h a s 5 o r b i t a l s f h a s 7 o r b i t a l s • Which of the pretty rooms or which of the dynamic rooms. • For example you could have px, py or pz.

  11. Fourth Quantum Number:Spin Quantum Number • This simply tells whether an electron is spinning 1 way or another when two of them are sharing an orbital (room). • The value of this quantum number is either +1/2 or –1/2.

  12. NO TWO ATOMS HAVE THE SAME SET OF QUANTUM NUMBERS
