  2. NIACE The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) is an independent charity which promotes adult learning across England and Wales. Through its research, development, publications, events, outreach and advocacy activity, NIACE works to improve the quality and breadth of opportunities available for all adults so they can benefit from learning throughout their lives.

LOCK DOWN • Hide PERSONAL networks from the public • Don’t contribute to public pages you wouldn’t want to be associated with publically. • Don’t share personal details Embrace • PROFESSIONAL networks (eg LinkedIn) • Professional groups in other networks • Promote your “brand” wherever possible

  5. “Brand yourself” across ALL networks. Your profile and cover pictures are available for everyone to see. Pro networks Photos work related – some with more personality than others! Complete profile with previous work and summary Personal networks Work related cover pic and sensible background, link and full bio with personality! Photos show personal side of your life – can be silly but not outrageous Sensible cover pic that says something about you.

Look at groups on LinkedIn or Facebook • Look at prominent speakers on Twitter / blogs • Watch #Tags / #Conversations (eg #EdChat) • Find contributors on your networks and follow with a personalised message where possible Now you have your brand, how can you use it? • JOIN IN! Follow, comment, contribute! • GET KNOWN Be someone who’s opinions are valid and distributed ` • Use, Use & USE! READ. WRITE.

  8. PRODUCE. Now you have your brand, how can you use it? READ. WRITE. Make & Publish resources, Blog, Speak, Vlog. Podcast, Make Courses..etc, etc, etc!

  9. But I don’t want to! • More than 80% of fortune 500 companies recruit through LinkedIn including IBM, Oracle, Accenture • Social media is on job descriptions • US companies ASKING for facebook password!

  10. So what do we do about this? • Information, Advice & Guidance • Social media advice • E-Safety Advice • Digital Literacy, Digital Literacy, Digital Literacy

  11. So what do we do about this? • Developing resources • Research into needs and methods of addressing them • Disseminating findings to the wider community
