  1. What Makes Us Sick Jennifer Kieffer, Andrew Sekelik, Ramon de Aragon, Katie Woodard

  2. Description • This science unit is designed to teach students about the organisms that will make them sick. • Fungus (Wanted Poster, That's Gross!) • Viruses (Who has the Virus) • Worms (I’ve Got Worms) • Bacteria (Things that Make Us Sick, Bacteria)

  3. Concept Map

  4. Grade Level • Suggested Grade Level • Intermediate Science, 7th or 8th Grade

  5. Pennsylvania Standards Abilities for a Technological World: 3.4.8.D3: Interpret and evaluate the accuracy of the information obtained and determine its usefulness. 3.4.8.D2: Operate and maintain systems in order to achieve a given purpose. Biological Science: 3.1.7.A1: Describe the similarities and differences of physical characteristics in diverse organisms. • S8.B.1.1.1: Describe the structures of living things that help them function effectively in specific ways (e.g., adaptations, characteristics).

  6. NETS Standards 1. Creativity and Innovation - Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. 3. Research and Information Fluency -Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. 6. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.

  7. FUNGUS ACTIVITY Wanted Poster

  8. Wanted Poster • Middle School Science • Standards  • TSW • Basic characteristics • Image • Utilize basic functions of Publisher • Technology • Intro lesson • Procedure • Assessment • Rubric 

  9. *Itchy, raised, red, scaly patches * Can appear as ringlike * Bald patches in a beard * Discolored, thick, crumbling nails * Infectious! Beware! * Caused by mold-like fungi called dermatophytes Reward for capture $500

  10. FUNGUS ACTIVITY That’s gross!

  11. That’s gross! • Middle School Science • Standards  • TSW • Hypothesize the spread of fungus on food • Track the spread of fungus • Keep accurate records • Create presentation to display information • Supplemental experiment • Procedure • Assessment • Rubric 

  12. Day 12 • 24” x 36” glass aquarium • Temperature: 86 degrees Fahrenheit • Humidity: 6% • Hours of light (per 24): 4 Group Three

  13. I’ve Got Worms?? • Description • The students will work in groups to gather information about types of parasitic worms in the human body. The students will use this information to create a concept map using mapping software. They will then make a presentation to present the information to the class. • About 3, 45 minute classes • Objective • Students will collaborate with group members to complete a project. • Students will define types or parasitic worms using the Internet with 100% accuracy. • Students will analyze information from a variety of sources and include important information in their concept map and presentation with 80% accuracy.

  14. Materials Required • Smart Board and projector • PCs with Internet access • Inspiration software • Reference books/ posters

  15. Teacher Presentation • Define parasitic worms • Explain the directions for the project • Select groups • Show example • Rubric

  16. Assessment • Group Rubric

  17. Assessment • Concept Map and Presentation Rubric

  18. Back-up Plan • Use the library to find information • Create concept map with posters and present to the class • Branching Out • Allow students to dive deeper in to parasite exploration • Accommodations • Monitor • Student groups

  19. Who has the virus • Description of Activity • Using a lab simulation and Microsoft Excel, students will see the magnification of viral reproduction before their very own eyes! • Learning objectives • Students will analyze data from the class to formulate a hypothesis on viral reproduction. • Students will demonstrate their understanding of how viruses are spread • Students will design an informative pamphlet to express their understanding of viral disease reproduction.

  20. Materials required • Phenolphthalein • Acid or Base Solution • Paper Cups • Access to the Internet • Microsoft Office (word and excel) • Color Ink Jet Printer • Test Tubes • Eye Droppers

  21. Activities: • Day One Lab • Day Two Analyze & Research • Day Three Construction

  22. Others… • Back Up: • Books • Paper/Pencil Method • Enrichment: • More Specific • Below Level: • Resource Room
