Facts & Figures Projects About ACF Related Links Contact Us • Background • In late 2004, an idea to establish a private foundation to address infant and child mortality inAfghanistan was conceived. Subsequently, primary and secondary research was conductedon the need for and feasibility of such an endeavor • Discussions with healthcare experts within Afghanistan proved that the need exists for a privatefoundation to address infant and child mortality. It was also clear that UNICEF, WHO & theAfghan Ministry of Health will work with this foundation • Healthcare expertise provided by: • Deputy Health Minister – Dr. Abdullah Sherzai • UNICEF Chief of Health and Nutrition – Dr. Chris Hirabayashi • World Health Organization (WHO) Head of Child Health Promotion – Dr. Ahmed Shadoul • {Dr. Basir Zikria, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital} • Partnerships/Alliances • The Columbia Law School Non-Profit / Small Business Clinic • {Sidley Austin or White & Case ?} • Team • Board of Directors • Jemal Dean Zikria (President)Dean began work at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in 2003 as a Director Team Leader in the U.S. Planning & Business Development department. He has since been promoted to the Head of Strategy (Senior Director) for the Cardiovascular & Metabolics Business Unit in the U.S. (known as Pratt), a division with about $7 Billion in annual revenues. Previous to Pfizer, Dean worked as the Vice President of Strategy & Business Development for McKesson’s market leading healthcare software subsidiary in Atlanta, Georgia, where he developed strategy for the division and its 20+ sub-business units. Prior to that, Dean was the Director of eCommerce Business Development at McKesson’s headquarters in San Francisco where he put together various joint ventures and deals that leveraged internet technology. Before his work in corporations, Dean had experiences with a bio-pharmaceutical start-up, medical research at Columbia University, Accenture Consulting and Deloitte Consulting’s Braxton Healthcare Strategy Practice. Also, through his early work in medical research & technology, Dean has been granted three U.S. patents (either as the sole inventor or co-inventor). Dean attended Rutgers University where he received a BS in Biology and an MBA in Strategic Management as well as being on the Varsity Football Team. Dean now resides in Old Greenwich, Connecticut with his wife, Dana, and their two young children – Nadia and Gavin. • Laila Afridi (Secretary)Bio blurb to come • Steven Krause (Treasurer)When Steve’s former roommate, Dean, suggested the Afghan Child Foundation, he jumped at the chance to make a difference. Together, they got the project started and here we are today.Steve is currently an attorney with White & Case and is admitted to the bar in New York and Massachusetts. Previous to White & Case, Steve worked in consulting, finance, and corporate management. He has spent time with companies ranging from major financial services institutions to internet start-ups as well as running a toy company. Steve received a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, an M.B.A. in Strategy and Entrepreneurship from the Anderson School at UCLA, and an B.A. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University, all with honors.
