Introduction • Kamalakar Memorial Trust is a charitable Organization based in Hyderabad • Established by Bharati Devi • Kamalakar Trust runs numerous programs for the under-privileged like free medical camps, free vocational training centers like type writing institutes, computer training centers etc. • Kamalakar trust built a charitable school by the name Vikas Bharati School in 2001. • The school is located in the village of Nagole in the suburb of Hyderabad. • The school primarily caters to the children of poor migrant labor from the nearby localities. • Medium of teaching is English. This helps the kids of migrant labor who are not conversant with the local language telugu.

About the School • The school has classes from LKG to 10th class • School has approximately 200 students and 13 teachers • School runs in a rented building • Students primarily come from economically backward families • Uniforms and books are provided to students at the beginning of every academic year • Transportation is provided for some kids in Kindergarten and lower primary classes • Books were provided to the school to establish a library thru Omprakash Foundation.

Funding • This project was taken up during 2007-08 model under an Asha-Stars model with a target to raise $8,000 • The project could raise only $4,000 from the stars • The school charged a fee last academic year on a strictly ability-to-pay basis. • Parents were requested to pay nominal school fee ranging from Rs.100 to Rs 200 / month depending on the class • Some parents paid fee in the amount of Rs 30 – Rs 150 depending on how much they could afford that month • Some parents didn’t pay anything for an entire year. • A total of Rs 146,000 was collected as fee in 2007-08 • Apart from Asha funds, school fees and other private donations there was a shortfall of approx Rs80,000 which was donated by Ms.Bharati Devi • Private schools in that area charge close to Rs 500 – Rs 1,000 / month

  5. School Annual Budget • Asha funds $4,000 annually under the “Asha-Stars” model • For the academic year 2009-10 Asha stars could raise only $2000 • Proposal for the Boston chapter is for $2,000 for 2009-10. Rest of $2,000 • will come from Asha-Stars
