What is Street Watch? • Community Patrol Initiative • Tackling low level issues that impact most on your community • Street Watch members are ordinary citizens with no police powers • Groups are organised by a co-ordinator • Run by the community for the community • Working closely with the police • Independent organisation

What are the aims of Street Watch? • Prevent crime by improving security, increasing vigilance, creating and maintaining a caring and cohesive community • Reducing opportunities for crime by increasing crime prevention awareness • Assist the Police by communicating with them and reporting activity of concern • Increase feelings of safety by providing reassurance and promoting good citizenship • Improve community cohesion

Background to Street Watch • Started by CI Phil Kedge, Hampshire Constabulary • Born out of frustration that the community demanded more Police • Challenged the community to work with the Police rather than against them • Developed now in other areas: Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Greater Manchester, Suffolk, Surrey and Wiltshire

  5. Why ****** LPU? Use this slide to add a more local approach i.e. • Your LPU/Local priorities • Other existing initiatives on your LPU that Street Watch will complement • Benefits to both your local community and your LPU

What is expected of Street Watch members? • Two levels: Volunteer/Co-ordinator • Minimum of 2 hours per month • Patrol in pairs, with high visibility jacket • Mobile phone to be carried • Adhere to Health & Safety Policy and Code of Conduct • Vetted to Level 1 National Non Police Personnel • Engage but avoid confrontational behaviour and conflict • Co-ordinate/attend bi-monthly meetings

  7. What can you expect from WMP? • Induction Programme • NH Sgt to attend 6 weekly meeting with Street Watch members • A single point of contact with the Police • Support with initial patrol • Updates regarding local crime, anti-social behaviour and local priorities • Appropriate support from the control room if there is reason to call • Public Liability Insurance

What happens next? • 1) Process Level 1 Vetting for those wanting to join the scheme and insurance 2) Induction meeting (insert date) to include:- Issue Fluorescent Jackets Issue Code of Conduct and Policy Familiarisation with Street Watch website – Scheme names, Passwords and Diary completion Accessing local NHT websites Patrolling to local priorities • 3) Scheme launch (insert date)
