It is the “adress” on the Internet • It’s actually a mask for the IP adress of the website • Video explaining DNS • To have your own website, you must purchase a domain. This will be your little corner of the internet • You purchase them from a Domain Registrar like enom, GoDaddy, or ,our bff, Lithium • Typically they range from $10-$15 for an unclaimed domain
Web Hosting • You need a physical location (server) to actually put the files that make up your website • You can use your own computer as a server but really shouldn’t • Until now you’ve been using space on Thomas’s server • Web Hosting companies have giant banks of servers on which they rent out space.
Free Hosting • Free Hosting: • Make a free blog with Blogger or WordPress.com, or a site with Goolge Sites and direct your domain to point to the location of these free sites • You are severely limited by this method
Dedicated Hosting • Used for corporations and interests for whom it is essential that their sites never go down. • Very expensive. Something like $200 a month
Shared Hosting • The host company splits up tiny partitions of their servers and leases them out • Perfect for small businesses and individuals • Cost: $1/month or $10/year • We will be using shared hosting from the company Lithium Hosting
