  1. Panel II: Faculty & Student Perspectives • Moderator: Corrine Taylor, Wellesley College • Panelists: • Corrine Taylor, Wellesley College • Ben Galluzzo, Shippensburg University • Michael Goldweber, Xavier University • Michelle Velez, Villanova University

  2. Big Picture: The Benefits

  3. Authentic, Real World Applications at All Levels of the Curriculum Not only in… semester-long group projects in upper level courses in Environmental Studies, although these opportunities for advanced work are important, too… http://www.wellesley.edu/environmentalstudies/research/es300

  4. Capstone Projects

  5. More Importantly for Wide Impact: Sustainability in Intro-Level Courses • In Introductory Math Courses: Sustainability examples are easy to add for…Estimation/Fermi problems, Unit Conversions, Calculations, Data Analysis, Modeling Linear and Exponential Growth

  6. Collaborations in Math/QR

  7. Math/QR Modules • MAA workshops in spring and summer of 2013 generated lots of Sustainability activities • SISL site for the Math/QR discipline: http://serc.carleton.edu/sisl/sustain_in_math.html • Search in general: http://serc.carleton.edu/sisl/activities.html It’s easy and rewarding to use these activities in the classroom!

  8. Disciplinary Dissemination • Conference Sessions • Journals • Programs and initiatives • PREP • MAM • MPE2013 & MPE2013+

  9. SISL in Math/QR • Curricular development • Assessment • Material review process Continue to introduce & share

  14. Association for Computing Machinery Computing for the Social Good Michael Goldweber Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education

  15. Computing for the Social Good To alter the perception regarding the study of computing so that (eventually) ambitious young idealists elect to study computing so they can “save the world.” SISL in STEM Convocation

  16. Primary Methodology(Or how does this look in the classroom) • Replace examples used in introductory computing courses (e.g. games, mobile apps) with ones that have a humanitarian appeal: sustainability, humanitarian non-profit, scientific research, etc. • Connect with students’ values rather than their interests. SISL in STEM Convocation

  17. Hoped for Outcomes • Beyond the obvious… • Increased interest in and retention of women and other under-represented demographics studying computation. • A shift in the mind-set of computing graduates. SISL in STEM Convocation

  18. Spreading the Word • Digital communities of like-minded instructors.(Computing Portal and blog) • Online repository of exemplar assignments. • Special sessions at professional meetings. • Widely disseminated publications. • Proselytizing authors of popular introductory texts. • We are also international: ITiCSE Working Group. SISL in STEM Convocation

  19. Future Steps • Work harder within the disciplinary society to connect with more members. • Get inserted into the new CS Principles course/initiative. (i.e. High Schools) • Develop interdisciplinary strategies. • Undertake rigorous research to test outcomes hypotheses. SISL in STEM Convocation

  20. Sustainability and the Undergraduate Experience A Student Perspective Michelle Velez Environmental Science and Spanish Villanova University, 2014 Sustainability Improves Student Learning Convocation September 19th – 20th, 2013
